Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, visited Australian Defence Force personnel in Afghanistan during a visit to Kabul, Afghanistan on 10 August 2016.

During her visit, Senator Payne visited the Afghan National Army Officer Academy. She also met with the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and the Minister of Defense, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Lieutenant General Abdullah Khan Habibi.

BAE Systems has announced a further reduction in the workforce at its Williamstown shipyard.

The loss of an additional 125 positions will take effect during September / October and is the result of a continuing decline in work as existing projects near completion.

In an important milestone for the Australian Defence Force and the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) program, the first of three destroyers, Hobart, was launched alongside the Port River wharf in Adelaide today.

This is a key achievement for the program and a big step towards the delivery of three highly capable warships to the Royal Australian Navy. Despite well publicised delays and cost blowouts Defence Minister Kevin Andrews was upbeat at the launch.

The Australian Government has spruiked its Defence credientials as part of it 2015 Federal Budget. Several major funding commitments were outlined including budget allocations for the ongoing conflict against Islamic State.

Today the Government released the First Principles Review of Defence.

 

The Review delivers on a Coalition election commitment to ensure that Defence is appropriately structured and organised and has the right business practices in place to support the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in the 21st century.

LAND 400 – Land Combat Vehicle System (LCVS) is one of Defence's most significant capability programs both in terms of acquisition cost and its impact on the Army's war fighting capability. The program seeks to address the emerging mounted close combat capability gap that exists between the current in service vehicles and increasingly capable weapons that could be used against Australian forces.
